Meet the machaca

The piranha’s
vegetarian cousin.

Machaca have brilliant silver bodies with large scales and heads that look almost golden. They’re related to the piranha, but they mostly eat what falls into the water: leaves, fruit, seeds, berries and insects.

Hook one and it goes airborne, leaping again and again to throw the hook. Pound for pound, it’s one of the most aggressive, hardest-fighting freshwater fish in Costa Rica.
