Rocks and deeper water close to shore. Roosterfish early in the morning, plus jacks, snapper and croaker.
Open sand with steady action on whiting, croaker, small jacks and mackerel. A good place to start.
Near the river mouth, with strong currents. Snook and snapper, especially in the rainy season.
Fish it at sunrise and sunset, ideally on a falling tide. Snook, snapper and jacks chase mullet and sardines.
Just north of Jacó. Calm water and rocky edges, good for light tackle and fly fishing. Snook and mojarra.
Nearby beaches for snook, roosterfish and jack crevalle, with fewer anglers.
About 20 minutes north. Deep channels and mangroves with snapper and snook. Tricky tides, and the river is famous for its crocodiles, so only fish it with a guide.
South of Jacó. A wide, slow mangrove system with snook, snapper and occasional tarpon. Live bait and soft plastics work well.
When to fish
Bait is active and predators hunt the edge of the surf: roosterfish, jacks, mackerel and croaker.
Snook and snapper move in. Jacks often feed on the outgoing tide.
Rivers flow and snook fishing improves around river mouths and estuaries.
Calmer surf, easier lure fishing, and good roosterfish and jacks.
Tip: high, outgoing tides are usually the most productive at the river mouths.

Yes. Jacó Beach, its river mouth and nearby beaches like Herradura, Hermosa and Esterillos all produce fish from shore, with jacks, snook, snapper, mackerel and sometimes roosterfish.
Early morning is best for roosterfish, jacks and mackerel. Sunset is best for snook and snapper at the river mouths, ideally on a high, falling tide.
An 8 to 10 ft medium spinning rod, 20 to 30 lb braid, a 20 to 40 lb fluorocarbon leader, and spoons, poppers, bucktails and soft plastics.
Yes. A Costa Rica fishing license is required for shore fishing too.
Be careful. Rivers and estuaries, especially the Tárcoles, have crocodiles, and the tides can be tricky. Stay back from the water’s edge and fish them with a local guide.
Sometimes, around the rocks at the north end at first light. For bigger roosterfish, an inshore charter to the reefs and points is much more reliable.
