Local Flights in Costa Rica

Flying (either commercial flights or private charter) is an easy way to get around. There are two domestic airlines – Sansa and Nature Air – that will take anglers on Costa Rica fishing trips right to or near the vast majority of the country’s prime sportfishing destinations

costa rica fishingFor maximum convenience in terms of times and carrying luggage, private charters will fly in and out of not only the airports and airstrips serviced by the two commercial airlines, but other airstrips as well.

By law, no carrier, commercial or charter, can fly after dark in Costa Rica.

Both Sansa and Nature Air operate daily flights to/from 25 destinations, almost all of them originating in San José. Both airlines use small prop planes: Nature Air features 19-seat Vistaliner Twin Otters; Sansa uses 12-seat Cessna Grand Caravan 208Bs.

Anglers taking private charters for fishing in Costa Rica can fly on five-passenger single-engine Cessnas, five-passenger twin-engine Cessnas, seven-passenger twin-engine Aztecs and larger planes.

On either of the two commercial airlines, or by charter, you can fly not only to major sportfishing destinations such as Quepos, Barra del Colorado, Tortuguero and Tamarindo; you can also fly to areas such as Coto47 and Drake Bay. Sansa flies out of its own terminal right beside the international terminal at Juan Santamaría International Airport, while Nature Air flies out of Tobias Bolaños Airport, 15 minutes from downtown San José.

Sportfishing enthusiasts will enjoy the fact that domestic flights are moderately priced at approximately $70-$105 each way depending on the distance to your Costa Rica fishing destination. Private charters are more expensive. Remember: during the peak tourist season from December to May, commercial flights are heavily booked.

Some important things to remember when taking commercial flights:
  • Check-in is 45 minutes before your scheduled flight. Late-comers might not be permitted to board the plane.
  • Maximum baggage allowance on both Sansa and Nature Air is 26 lbs (12kgs), including carry-on bags, per person
  • Excess baggage will be charged at about $1.00 a pound ($2.25 per kilo) on both airlines. If your flight is full, the airlines will insist on putting excess baggage on another flight, so travel light!
  • Surfboards are often treated as excess baggage, so let us know beforehand if you are taking boards with you.
  • Also let us know if any angler in your group weighs more than 250lbs (115kg). You will have to buy two tickets for that guy!
